- 1. ALTA VISTA
Offering compact or detailed searches through what the company claims is the largest Web index, Digital Equipment Corporation's Alta Vista can help you find your way through 8 billion words filling 16 million Web pages. It also provides a full-text index of more than 13,000 newsgroups.
2. ASK JEEVES

3. DOG PILE

4. GO.COM
Once known as Infoseek Guide, GO.COM helps you find what you're looking for on the Net, for free. With each search, you get the most relevant matches, related topics to explore, and timely news and views from popular magazines, TV networks, and the best online experts. GO.COM also makes it easy to find email addresses, stock quotes, company profiles, and more.
5. GOOGLE
This search engine employs text-matching techniques to find pages that are both important and relevant to a user's search.
6. HOTBOT
HotBot - created in a partnership between Inktomi Corporation and Wired Magazine's HotWired Ventures - claims to search every Web page currently in existence and they say HotBot will index the entire Web weekly.
7. LYCOS
Lycos' new search engine and redesigned navigation bar lets you efficiently search document titles and content. It features a database that the company claims has millions of link descriptors and documents built by a Web crawler that brings in thousands of documents daily. The index searches document title, headings, links, and keywords it locates in these documents.
8. OPEN TEXT INDEX
Open Text provides Livelink the leading Collaboration and Knowledge Management software for the global enterprise. The Open Text Index searches every word of every Web page the company has indexed - some 21 billion words and phrases in all. The company claims it's one of the largest indexes available. Pose queries of virtually any length, or focus in by searching only titles or links. Open Text provides its search services free of charge and also sells its software so you can index your own intranet data.
9. WEBCRAWLER SEARCHING
This engine, powered by InfoSpace, Inc., allows searches by document title and content.
10. YAHOO
Yahoo has been accepting submissions from Internet sites since what seems like the beginning of it all. There's an editorial filter at work here - not every college student's home page makes it into the directory - but Yahoo's veteran status has allowed it to build a comprehensive cross-discipline resource base.
